Made these a few weeks back.
I thought they looked pretty simple, and the list of ingredients weren't things you would have to drive three miles to source for.
Pretty much pain-free recipe (unless you burn your hand in the oven)(it happens).
Except when you are rolling the chocolate dough on the vanilla dough it gets real sticky and crumbly.
i overcame that my rolling each dough out on plastic wrap and then rolling it while peeling pat the wrap.
It took a while, but i managed to get several successful batches with this technique.
Recipe?
-375g plain flour
-100g icing sugar
-250g unsalted butter
-2 tsp double cream
-2 tsp vanilla essence
-3 tbsp cocoa powder
-1 egg white
-2 tbsp granulated sugar
Method:
1. sift the flour and icing sugar together and rub in the butter. When the mixture starts to come together, add the cream and vanilla essence. Divide the mixture in half and add cocoa powder to one half.
2. Knead separately until smooth.
3. Mix small amounts of each dough together and roll into four 4-cm-wide logs. Refrigerate.
4. Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius. Brush each log with egg white and roll in sugar. Cut into 6-mm-thin slices and place on baking sheets.
5. Bake for 8-10 minutes and cool.
[keeps 5-7 days]
[makes 3 1/2 dozen]
They are like the little old-fashioned biscuits they used to have.
it was crazy fun rolling the dough, despite the icky-stick and my hair in my face.
